Pangandaran is where West Java goes to the beach. This Pangandaran travel guide covers the bits that matter: it’s a long trip from Bandung (5–8 hours), the town beach is busy and fine rather than spectacular, and the real reasons to come are the jungle peninsula, the surf at Batu Karas and the river canyon at Green Canyon.
Give it at least two full days. Three is better, because the journey eats most of a day each way.
Last checked: November 2026. Prices and schedules change, so confirm before you go.

How to get to Pangandaran
There’s no quick way. Pick the option that wastes the least of your time.
Bus from Bandung
Budiman runs direct buses from Terminal Cicaheum in Bandung to Pangandaran, with AC and non-AC classes. Reported fares are around IDR 75,000–115,000 depending on class and departure, and the trip takes about 6–8 hours.
It’s cheap and direct. It’s also long, stops often and goes through some slow towns. Bring snacks, water and something to do.
Train to Banjar, then road
There’s no railway station in Pangandaran itself. Trains stop at Banjar, and you continue 1–2 hours by local bus, elf or pre-booked car.
- KA Pangandaran: A long-distance train launched in 2024 that runs between Jakarta (Gambir) and Banjar via Bandung. It has economy and executive classes. Launch-period fares from Jakarta were around IDR 225,000 economy and IDR 375,000 executive, with a panoramic car costing more. The Bandung–Banjar section is cheaper. Check current fares in Access by KAI.
- KA Pasundan and other economy trains: Cheaper, slower and with fewer convenient times.
The train beats the bus on comfort and predictability. The catch is the Banjar transfer. If you arrive in the late afternoon, arrange a car in advance rather than hunting for a bus at the station.
Travel shuttles
Minivan “travel” services run from pick-up points in Bandung, with reported fares starting around IDR 125,000 per person. Fewer passengers than a bus, sometimes door-to-door. You’ll usually book on WhatsApp.
Private car with driver
The most flexible option, and the only realistic way to combine Pangandaran with Garut or Tasikmalaya on the same day. Expect a full day of driving. Overnight driver costs (room and meals) are usually on you, so ask upfront.
What about flying?
Nusawiru Airport sits near Cijulang, close to Green Canyon. Scheduled flights have come and gone over the years. Check what’s actually operating before you plan around it.
Getting around Pangandaran
- Scooter rental: The easiest way to reach Batu Karas, Green Canyon and Batu Hiu. You legally need a licence valid for motorbikes.
- Car with driver for a day: Good for groups. Most guesthouses can arrange one.
- Becak and ojek: Fine for short hops in town.
The beaches
Pangandaran town beach (West and East)
The town sits on a narrow neck of land, so it has two beaches. West Beach (Pantai Barat) is the main one: wide, sandy, good for sunset, and busy with banana boats and food stalls. East Beach (Pantai Timur) is the fishing side, rougher and better for sunrise and seafood.
Entry to Pangandaran beach plus Batu Hiu is around IDR 20,000 per person (2025 rates, still quoted in January 2026). Since 2024, fees are charged per person rather than per vehicle.
The sea here is open Indian Ocean. Swimming is only sensible in calm conditions near the lifeguard flags. Rip currents are common on Java’s south coast, so if locals aren’t swimming, you shouldn’t either.
Batu Karas
About 30–35 km west of town, close to Green Canyon. Batu Karas is the surf spot: a sheltered point break that suits beginners, with board rental and lessons on the beach. It’s quieter and more relaxed than Pangandaran town, and plenty of people base themselves here instead.
Entry for Batukaras and Madasari together is around IDR 15,000 per person.
Batu Hiu
A clifftop park west of town with views along the coast. Short stop, good late afternoon. It’s on the same ticket as the main beach.
Pantai Karapyak
East of town, rocky and less crowded. Entry is around IDR 6,000.
Pangandaran Nature Reserve (Cagar Alam)
The jungle-covered peninsula at the end of town is the best thing about Pangandaran. Monkeys, hornbills if you’re lucky, caves, a white-sand beach on the far side (Pasir Putih) and the occasional deer.
- Fees: Around IDR 210,000 for foreigners on weekdays and IDR 310,000 on weekends, versus around IDR 16,000–21,000 for domestic visitors.
- Guide: Hire a local guide at the gate if you’re going beyond the main paths. They know the caves and where the wildlife hangs out.
- Monkeys: Long-tailed macaques here are bold. Keep food out of sight and bags zipped. Don’t feed them.
Some visitors take a boat round to Pasir Putih instead. Agree on the price and return time before you get in.
Green Canyon (Cukang Taneuh)
About 27–31 km from Pangandaran town, Green Canyon is a stretch of the Cijulang river where the water runs green between mossy cliffs. Locals call it Cukang Taneuh, meaning “land bridge.”
Two ways to do it
- By boat: A wooden boat takes you upriver to where the canyon narrows. A boat for about 5–6 people costs around IDR 200,000 on top of the small entry fee (around IDR 10,000–15,000 per person). The ride is about 30–45 minutes. Some boatmen will let you swim in the canyon section; ask first.
- Body rafting: You float and swim downriver in a life jacket and helmet, with a guide, through the canyon and over small drops. Packages run around IDR 175,000–250,000 per person, usually with short and long (about 10 km) options. Much more fun than the boat if you can swim.
When it’s closed
Green Canyon closes when the river runs high, which happens a lot in the rainy season. The water also turns brown, which kills the “green” part. Republika reported it closed four times in a single month in 2022 because of high water.
Go in the morning, in the dry season, and check with your guesthouse the day before.
Alternatives
Citumang, near Parigi, is a smaller river with body rafting packages around IDR 85,000–100,000 per person and entry around IDR 20,000. Less dramatic, but cheaper and often less crowded.
Best time to visit Pangandaran
- Dry season (roughly May to September): Calmer seas, clearer river water at Green Canyon, best for everything.
- Rainy season (roughly November to March): Heavy afternoon rain, frequent Green Canyon closures, rougher sea.
- Avoid if you can: Indonesian school holidays, Lebaran and New Year. Pangandaran is a top domestic beach trip and prices for rooms spike.
Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends all year round.
Practical tips
- Cash: ATMs are in Pangandaran town. Batu Karas has fewer options, so carry enough for a few days there.
- Accommodation: Town has the widest range; Batu Karas suits surfers and people after a quieter stay. Book ahead for weekends. Browse our reviews too.
- Tsunami awareness: Pangandaran was hit by a tsunami in 2006. Note the evacuation route signs near your hotel. If you feel a strong or long earthquake on the coast, move to high ground straight away.
- Sun: The south coast sun is strong. Shade between 11am and 2pm.
- Dress: Swimwear is fine on the beach. Cover up a little when walking through town and villages.
- Money and practicalities: See our Travel Tips section.
