Last checked: November 2026. Immigration rules change often. Always confirm on the official Indonesian immigration website before you travel.

The Indonesia e-VOA is an electronic Visa on Arrival that you buy online before your trip, and it lets you stay up to 30 days for tourism, family visits or meetings. You apply on the official portal, evisa.imigrasi.go.id, pay by card, and get the visa by email, so you can skip the visa counter queue when you land.

That’s the short version. Below is exactly how to apply, what you need ready, and the small things that get people stuck at the airport.

A heads-up on the fee

In August 2026 the Director General of Immigration announced plans to raise the Visa on Arrival fee. Indonesian media reported the new figures as IDR 750,000 if you apply online before you travel and IDR 1,000,000 if you buy it on arrival. When we checked, the official B1 visa page still showed IDR 500,000 and we couldn’t find a published start date for the new fee. So the honest answer is: expect to pay IDR 500,000, but look at the price shown on the official portal before you pay. Whatever it shows is the real number.

Do you actually need an e-VOA?

Not everyone does. Check these three cases first:

  • You’re from a visa-free country. Citizens of ASEAN countries and a short list of others (such as Turkey, Brazil and Colombia) can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. The catch: visa-free stays can’t be extended. If you might want more than 30 days, an e-VOA is the smarter pick, if your country is on the VoA list too. Check the current list on imigrasi.go.id, or browse our Entering Indonesia guides.
  • You’re on the VoA list. Then the e-VOA is the easiest way in for a holiday of up to 60 days.
  • You’re neither. You’ll need to apply for a regular visit visa with a sponsor through the same portal. The e-VOA isn’t open to you.

The e-VOA is for tourism, visiting family, meetings, conventions, exhibitions and transit. It does not allow work. Immigration states clearly that holders may not sell goods or services or get paid by anyone in Indonesia. That includes “just helping out” at a friend’s café or DJing for cash in Canggu. Immigration in Bali regularly detains and deports people for exactly this.

What you need before you start

Get these ready so you can finish in one sitting:

  1. Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay. Emergency or temporary passports need 12 months.
  2. A scan or photo of your passport bio page. JPG, JPEG or PNG. The portal’s FAQ says files must be 200 KB or smaller, so shrink big phone photos first.
  3. A recent color photo of your face (taken within the last year), plain background, no sunglasses.
  4. A return or onward ticket out of Indonesia. A flight to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur counts.
  5. A credit or debit card. The portal accepts Visa, Mastercard and JCB.
  6. An email address you can check on the road. The visa arrives there.

How to apply for the Indonesia e-VOA, step by step

The portal’s design changes from time to time, so button labels may differ slightly. The flow stays the same.

  1. Open the official site. Type evisa.imigrasi.go.id into your browser yourself. Don’t click ads in search results (more on that below).
  2. Create an account with your email and confirm it through the activation email. If the email doesn’t arrive, check spam. Still nothing? Immigration’s FAQ says to use the live chat or email contact@imigrasi.go.id with your name and passport number.
  3. Choose the e-VOA. Pick the visa on arrival option, then select tourism (or the purpose that fits your trip).
  4. Enter your passport details exactly as printed. Name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, issue and expiry dates.
  5. Upload your passport page and photo. If the upload fails, it’s nearly always file size or format.
  6. Add your travel details: arrival date, flight number and where you’ll stay.
  7. Check everything twice, then pay by card. Keep the receipt.
  8. Wait for the email. Immigration says the e-VOA is sent within 24 hours. Often it’s much faster.
  9. Save the e-VOA on your phone and print one copy. Paper doesn’t run out of battery.

Apply a few days to a few weeks before you fly. Since the e-VOA is valid for 90 days from issue, applying too early (say, four months out) means it can expire before you land.

What happens at the airport

With an e-VOA in hand, you go straight to immigration. Skip the visa purchase counter. Many major airports have autogates that read your passport. If the gate rejects you, join the officer queue; it’s not a problem with your visa.

Officers can ask to see your onward ticket and where you’re staying, so have both on your phone.

You’ll also need to fill in the All Indonesia arrival declaration, which covers immigration, customs and health in one form. It’s free and you can do it from three days before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id. It’s separate from your visa, so do both.

Watch out for fake e-VOA websites

Search “Indonesia e-VOA” and you’ll see a wall of lookalike sites. Some are agencies that add a service fee on top of the government fee. Others are outright scams.

Simple rules:

  • Official Indonesian government sites end in .go.id. For this visa that means evisa.imigrasi.go.id, plus imigrasi.go.id for information.
  • Immigration has said the evisa portal takes card payments directly, with no agent or sponsor needed.
  • If a site charges far more than the fee shown on the official portal, you’re paying a middleman.
  • Domains ending in .com, .org or .info with “indonesia” or “evisa” in the name aren’t government sites, however official they look.

Common mistakes that cause problems

  • Name doesn’t match the passport. Type it exactly as in the passport, including middle names.
  • Mixing up 0 and O in the passport number. It’s a classic, and it can make autogates reject you.
  • Wrong passport. Dual nationals: apply with the passport you’ll actually show at the airport.
  • Applying too early. The 90-day validity window catches people who plan far ahead.
  • No onward ticket. Airlines sometimes check before you board, not just Indonesian immigration.
  • Assuming the e-VOA covers work. It doesn’t. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area that a tourist visa doesn’t clearly cover; if that’s your plan, look at the dedicated visa types on imigrasi.go.id.
  • Forgetting your passport’s 6 months. Count from the end of your stay, not the start.

What happens if you stay longer than 30 days?

You can extend your e-VOA once, for another 30 days, giving you 60 days in total. Immigration says e-VOA holders can do this online through evisa.imigrasi.go.id, though some offices still ask you to come in for a photo.

If you don’t extend and you overstay, the fine is IDR 1,000,000 per day, according to Indonesian immigration offices. Overstay 60 days or more and you face deportation and a ban on returning. Set a reminder on your phone for a week before your 30 days run out.

FAQ

How long does the Indonesia e-VOA take to process?

Immigration says the e-VOA is emailed within 24 hours of payment. In practice it often arrives faster, but don’t leave it to the night before your flight.

Can I still buy a visa on arrival at the airport instead?

Yes, the regular VoA is still sold at airports and seaports that offer it. You’ll queue to pay at the counter. The announced fee change would also make buying on arrival more expensive than applying online, so the e-VOA is the better bet.

Is the e-VOA the same as the All Indonesia arrival card?

No. The e-VOA is your visa, your permission to enter. The All Indonesia form is an arrival declaration covering immigration, customs and health. You need both.

Can I use the e-VOA for multiple entries?

No. It’s single entry. If you leave Indonesia, even for a weekend in Singapore, you’ll need a new visa to come back.

My country is visa-free. Should I still get an e-VOA?

Only if your country is also on the VoA list and you think you’ll stay more than 30 days. A visa-free entry costs nothing but can’t be extended or converted.

Can I apply for my family in one go?

Each traveler needs their own e-VOA, including children. You’ll fill in an application and pay a fee for each person.
